What is Chemical Engineering?

Chemical engineers realize and perform manufacturing processes that create high-quality products with desired properties from raw materials via chemical, biological and physical processes. The chemical engineer deals with appliances and plants to create these products, based on the understanding of the processes involved.
The course of study Chemical Engineerings belong to the field of engineering studies with a focus on Mechanical Engineering and at the same time with strong scientific continguents from physics and chemistry.

Work fields and career prospects

Chemical engineers are highly valued and employed in several industrial branches because of their broad education. They develop, realize and perform manufacturing processes that create high-quality products with desired properties from raw materials via chemical, biological and physical processes. The course of studies

It is an engineering studies programme with a focus on Mechanical Engineering and and at the same time with strong scientific continguents from physics and chemistry. The goal is to educate engineers that are able to develop, realize and perform manufacturing processes that create high-quality products with desired properties from raw materials via chemical, biological and physical processes. Product quality, Dabei müssen die Ziele Produktqualität, economic efficienty, safety and environmental protection are the goals to be regarded.

The course of studies Chemical Engineering conveys basic engineering skills to detect and solve technical problems appropriately. Additionally, profoung knowledge in physics and chemistry is very important to understand the material processes. Because of this, the curriculum is being complemented with a complying scientific amount (approx. 1/3 of the compulsory part). This shall enable the graduates to get to know and understand scientific problem-solving strategies, next to the basic knowledge. The whole course of studies is constructed interdisciplinary from the beginning on. Chemical enigeers shall be able to take up a bridge-position between energy engineers and scientists.

Why studying Chemical Engineering?

In a highly specialized industry that develops quickly, the need for competent engineers is growing continually. Not the gained factual and specific knowledge (that often ages quickly) but the understanding and application of the basics are necessary, to operate in a rapidly developing environment.

In the working life, the ability to work in an interdisciplinary team is demanded. The whole course of studies is constructed interdisciplinary from the beginning on and the students get to know various mindsets and terminologies of the different disciplines (science and Mechanical Engineering) at an early point of time.

Pupil internship

The faculty of Mechanical Engineering offers pupils of grades10 - 13 the opportunity to do an interesting and exciting internship, in the field of Chemical Engineering as well. Further information can be found here.

Summer School Chemistry

The summer school chemistry is an 8-week study programe. The department chemistry of the University of Paderborn offers it for free and allows you to receive your Bachelor’s Degree a semester earlier than the others will. In the mornings you will visit lectures to lern theoretical basics that you will practically use in our laboratories in the afternoon. Die dort gelehrten Veranstaltungen werden im Bachelor’s Degree CIW angerechnet, wodurch sich die Studiendauer verkürzen lässt. Nähere Information to Sommerschule findest du here.
