In autumn 2012 the Institute for Lightweight Design with Hybrid Systems (ILH) at the University of Paderborn was founded. It connects different chairs of the faculties of natural sciences (departments of chemistry and physics) and mechanical engineering. The interdisciplinary research approach allows the consideration of the entire process chain of hybrid systems, ranging from the development of materials, based on polymers and metals, to process technologies and simulation as well as recycling aspects. Hybrid systems can perfectly be adapted to the specific loads of structures and thus offer a large potential for holistic lightweight constructions.
Ten working groups form the core of the ILH. In addition thirteen associated partners from different departments at the University of Paderborn are the first points of contacts for cooperation with the Institute of Lightweight Design with Hybrid Systems.
Four research areas were defined for the fundamental understanding of the interactions within the product life cycle of hybrid systems.
