Laser Powder Bed Fusion metal processing is an additive manufacturing technology which is of great interest to the manufacturing of electrical machines due promising advantages. However, addititive manufacturing is not wide-spread yet when compared to conventional procedures. One of the major challenges is the reduction of eddy currents originating in the rotor.
Conventionally, insulated metal sheets which restrict the current paths perpendicular to the field direction to narrow areas of the sheet cross-sections are used, thus greatly reducing losses. In this study, an alternative was developed; the adaptation of process parameters and design measures allow a surface slitting which can be used to effectively reduce eddy currents in additively manufactured rotors of synchronous machines.
