After two years of restrictions due to the pandemic, the LWF was able to use January 2023 to offer excursions to cooperating companies as part of its courses. Hai Extrusion Germany GmbH in Soest was visited as part of the bachelor's course "Lightweight Materials" and MTU Maintenance Hannover GmbH as part of the master's course "Thermal Joining Processes". With over 15 participants in each case, the excursions were well received as a supplement to the theoretical lecture content. Both excursions began with a presentation of the respective company.
Hai Extrusion Germany GmbH manufactures extruded aluminum profiles in Soest and was then able to impressively demonstrate the dimensions of such a plant to the students by means of a plant tour focusing on the new 3300 kg extrusion line. A supplementary presentation on aluminum extrusion gave the students a hands-on demonstration of industrial implementation.
MTU Maintenance Hannover GmbH, which repairs medium and large commercial engines, also conducted a site tour and adapted it to the lecture content. The focus was on welding processes and non-destructive testing (NDT). Both excursions ended with a question and answer session.
The LWF would like to thank the companies Hai Extrusion Germany GmbH and MTU Maintenance Hannover GmbH for the impressions gained.
