The article "Multi-domain simulation of shifting behavior of spring-applied brakes" by L. Blumenthal, D. Zimmer and S. Stieren was published in "Konstruktion (2022) No. 11-12. (DOI).

Summary:

Simulations can specifically support development processes for individualized spring-applied brakes. The large number of different physical effects interacting with each other in spring-applied brakes pose a challenge here. This article describes an approach for the simulation of shifting behavior in spring-applied brakes while considering electricity, magnetism, mechanics, thermodynamics and thermo-dilation in a joint model. The validity of the model is proven by experimental validation.
