Ad­di­tion­al re­search ca­pa­cites for metal­lic 3D print

The Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) grants additional funding for the research project "KitkAdd". The additional 390,000 Euros from the BMBF, at a total funding of approx. 840,000 Euros, allowed Paderborn University to set up additional lab facilities for metallic 3D print and equip them with the respective machinery. The overall budget of the project "Combination and integration of established technologies with additive manufacturing processes in a process chain - KitkAdd" amounts to 5.3 mio. Euros and runs till the end of 2019.

Based on the trendsetting research results of the ongoing project, the BMBF granted the Chair of Design and Drive Engineering - KAt additional funding to expand the machine capacites for more in-depth research of hybrid process chains for metallic 3D print. Specifically, this involves a turbine blade by Siemens AG which is to be produced by a combination of additive and conventional processing. In a series of tests at e.g. the KAt, various test specimens are to be produced and analyzed in order to assess the quality and reliability of the future components for industrial applications. Generally, this research is intended to promote hybrid component processing, i.e. the combination of conventional and additive processes. "Often, the production of individual, simple components is more cost-efficient using established manufacturing processes than producing them entirely additively." says Tobias Lienekde, scientific staff member at the KAt and the Direct Manufacturing Research Center (DMRC).

With the support of the Departments of Facility Management as well as Occupational and Environmental Safety, the infrastructure required for realizing a Laser Beam Melting machine (LBM) in building P4 at the university.

The research projekt "KitkAdd", started in 2017, focuses on developing innovative, hybrid process chains and comprises eight research and industry partners under the consortium management of the Siemens AG. On the part of Paderborn University, the Chair of Design and Drive Engineering (KAt, Prof. Dr.-Ing Detmar Zimmer) and the Direct Mnaufacturing Research Denter (DMRC, Dr.-Ing. Christian-Friedrich Lindemann) participate in this project in addition to the chair of Production System and Quality Management at the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT) (wbk, Prof. Dr.-Ing. Gisela Lanza). The project "KitkAdd" contributes within the BMBF umbrella program "Innovations for production, services and work of tomorrow" and is supervised by the lead partner Karlsruhe (PTKA).
