Bachelor Degree Course

All in all there are 180 college credits to achieve within six semesters of the bachelor degree course.

The basic study of the bachelor degree course should provide the basic contents and methods of mechanical engineering, as the study objective predicts. It lasts 4 semesters and encloses 121 college credits. The lectures consist of mandatory modules that cannot be chosen freely. All test achievements of the basic study courses must be valued with at least a D (4,0).

Achievements relevant for your final grade are acquired the same way. Lectures of in-depth studies (5th -6th semester) have to be finished in the amount of 59 college credits.

The following types of courses are offered:

Lecture: The lecture serves as an introduction to the subject and the systematic knowledge transfer in the form of lectures.

Exercise: In the exercise, the subject matter is deepened and explained using examples and practised independently by the students.

Seminars and project seminars: In seminars and project seminars, a sub-area of a subject or several subjects is jointly developed, expanded and deepened by students and teaching staff.

Practicals: Serve to deepen the knowledge imparted through experiments.

The election of a specialisation determines two basic modules. Within these basic modules, two classes with a fixed total of 8 credit points must be completed. The following specialisations can be chosen in the specialisation programme:
Energy and Process Engineering, Plastics Engineering, Mechatronics, Product Development, Production Engineering, Lightweight Construction with Hybrid Systems, Material Properties and Simulation, Engineering Informatics and Vocational Education and Training.

Each basic module consists of two compulsory courses, each worth 4 credit points. The current version of the module handbook for the Bachelor's degree programme in Mechanical Engineering can be found here.

In the compulsory elective module, two classes with a fixed total of eight credit points must be selected from a catalogue of modules and completed. Students should be given the opportunity to create a personal profile through their election.

A compulsory elective module consists of classes on a subject area described by the title of the module. The basic modules from the specialisations are listed here and can also be selected as compulsory elective modules if they have not already been selected as basic modules.

The bachelor's thesis is an examination paper that concludes the professionally-oriented bachelor's programme. The workload for the written part of the bachelor's thesis is 12 credit points and 3 credit points for the associated colloquium. The written part of the bachelor's thesis comprises 360 working hours and must be completed within a period of 20 weeks. Students can only be admitted to the bachelor's thesis if they have successfully completed all modules of the basic study programme and have completed the 12-week internship.
