Specialist advice
The specialisation advisory service offers a personalised, one-to-one consultation on the various specialisations and areas of focus within Mechanical Engineering. It is run by ten specialisation advisers, each of whom represents a particular specialisation objectively and goes beyond the classes on offer from their respective department.
When should you attend the specialisation advisory session?
- We strongly recommend that you visit the specialisation advisory service during your fourth bachelor’s semester and before progressing to the master’s programme, when you will need to decide on your core and compulsory elective modules.
- If you have any questions about planning your personal study programme or would like advice on drawing up your individual study plan.
- If you are unsure which specialisation best suits your interests and abilities, you are, of course, welcome to seek support from several specialisation advisers to help you make your decision.

Before the start of each semester, information sessions are usually held to provide an overview and to help students make informed choices as they transition into their specialisation studies. These sessions also offer a good opportunity to get to know the specialisation advisers. You can find the upcoming dates in the notice box below.

The information session on specialisation tracks and the subsequent PAUL induction – particularly for Bachelor’s graduates from other universities – as part of the orientation phase (O-Phase for short) is expected to take place on Tuesday, 6 October 2026 from 3 p.m. to approximately 5 p.m. in room P1.4.17 (following the university’s central first-year welcome event starting at 9 a.m., as part of the programme organised by the MB and HG Wing student councils). There, you can meet the specialisation advisers in person and arrange an appointment for a consultation later in the O-Week.
Be sure to make the most of the get-to-know-you programme organised by the MB or HG Wing student councils as part of the orientation week!
Master-O Phase (PANDA course)
We would like to continue to make the ‘Master-O-Phase’ course – which was set up in previous semesters – available to you via the University of Paderborn’s PANDA system (Learning Management System (LMS)). You can find out how to access it here! Among other things, the specialisation advisers introduce themselves and their specialisation areas in a video message and look forward to answering your questions – either in the forum or in person via the contact details provided.
